* We are very proud of Mary Paley, and her portrait hangs by the entrance to the building. She was the first woman to graduate from Cambridge University. She was probably also the first woman to teach economics at any British university. In 1877 she moved with her husband Alfred Marshall, another famous economist, to found the teaching of economics at what was then University College, Bristol. Mary Marshall (1850 – 1944), née Paley.
